First Lady meets South African CEO

The wife of the President, Mrs. Janet Museveni, received and held a meeting with Ms. Irene Charnley, Chief Executive Officer of the South African based Smile Communication Ltd who called on her at State House, Nakasero. Smile Communication Ltd is registered to offer communication services in Uganda.

During the meeting, Ms Irene Charnley told Mrs. Museveni that her company aims at providing affordable communication to citizens specifically targeting the rural poor. She further noted that Smile Communication shall use internet based technology to offer high quality affordable voice and non-voice communication to all its customers. Mrs. Museveni welcomed Smile Communications to the country and expressed happiness that it targets the rural areas where the majority of Ugandan citizens live. She said that communication was essential to the lives and businesses of all people adding that lowering the cost of communication would greatly impact positively on the standards of living of citizens.

Also at the meeting, was the State Minister for ICT, Mr. Alintuma Nsambu.
